Further Life Studies

Life Study - Acrylics
65 x 78 cm
Exhibited at 2005 South Holland Exhibition, Spalding.
The occasional chance to join a life group is always seized with anticipation so I tried using a variety of mark making techniques to paint the energy and vigour of the multiple poses. This included brush, brush end and bamboo stick. Exciting, exhausting and exhilarating.

Life Study - Watercolour

40 x 68 cm - framed and on our walls at home.

This was a privileged chance to study life in it earliest form and working in watercolour - a medium I use infrequently - added to the immediate fragility. Using large brushes and working with speed throughout the session, we did several studies leading to this final one - a favourite.

Life Study - Acrylics

Owned by Nancy and selected in 2006 on her recent visit to England

This was a challenging opportunity to capture in one sitting an unusual study from a difficult angle. I set out to work in reflected tone and blocks of colour using large brush marks.

Life Studies

Watercolour and Oil Pastel
"Pensive"
48 x 38 cm
The occasional opportunity to join a drawing class is always seized and my inclination is to work in colour or charcoal. Watercolour is is not a medium I use very often, but one I like using for life studies.

Oil on Pastel Paper
"Movement"
68 x 48 cm
Exhibited at Peterborough exhibition - 2001
and South Holland Exhibition - 2002
Painted extremely fast in a life class as the model moved through
repeated positions held for only a few minutes.

Pastels

25 x 40cm

This was the outcome of many smaller studies done towards course work 1998.

The deep grey of the pastel paper was left exposed as the mid areas of shadow.

Now hanging on our stairway.

Chris

This portrait of Chris was painted when he was much younger and prepared to sit still long enough [thanks to TV] for me to capture his image in a more painterly way. Having studied the pastel work of Degas' Bathers, I remember being fascinated and strongly influenced by the colours he used to make up flesh tones. Our elder son Tim was away at this time and the opportunity to try his portrait - him and Sarah together? is something I'd love to do.

I do very little portraiture and spent hours getting this likeness of my son as 'real' to me as possible. Working from a photograph set in his favourite habitat I feel I couldn't have done this style justice without knowing and loving the subject!

Tea Cup and Jug

Owned by Tim and Sarah
A tonal study of two simple porcelain pieces. Painted directly in oils
using brush and pallet knife, without drawing first. Approximately A2 in size, I have further cropped the image in this photo as it felt more interesting to 'lose' the handle of the jug. I'm currently working on the same subject in very soft blues and ivory tints as well as a different and difficult study in red again set up by Barbara. Difficult for me that is - Monica's studies in red are lovely.
